Upcycled Tin Container

I have this tiny bathroom off of our kitchen. It’s small enough to be a useful guest bathroom, but not quite large enough to fill with all of the cute home decor from Hobby Lobby. So I decided to get creative and place a few items in key places that would make the room feel warm without feeling overcrowded.

In remembering that we had a few old Christmas tins in the garage, I headed straight for my paint and paint brushes, and restyled one of the tins into an adorable item for the back of the toilet. I made a bathroom tissue tin to hold an extra roll in style!

This project may seem familiar if you have seen the DIY Chalkboard Coffee Container. The instructs are super simple and the result is a lot of fun.

What you will need:

  • A tin container
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Chalkboard label
  • Chalk

Step 1:

Find an old tin container that fits the size of a toilet paper roll from a relative’s attic, a local antique shop or check out craft stores and online shops. This is what mine looked like before it was painted.

Step 2:

Pick up a container of craft paint in a color that matches your decor and a small paint brush. There are lots of options to choose from. Honestly, I didn’t research which paint would be best since it was a spur of the moment project, but I used some basic craft paint that I already had at home.

Step 3:

Make sure any dust or debris has been washed off of the container and paint away! As long as you use even strokes and cover the container, you can paint a single coat. I used just one coat and it seemed to work just fine. Then, let it dry for the designated time list on the paint instructions.

Step 4:

Place your chalkboard label even in the center of your container and use a thin chalk marker or stick of chalk to draw on your 5ยข (or whatever message you would like to add).

Step 5:

Fill the container with a roll of toilet paper and joyfully display your new container in your restroom!
