DIY Burlap and Wood Cross
I found the original idea for this on Pinterest and decided to try one of my own!
- We had a cabinet door sample on hand so I decided to use that for the wood backing, but the material for the backing is really up to you! Wood pieces are typically sold at a basic craft store like Hobby Lobby.
- I sanded and stained the blank side with a dark stain that I picked up at Home Depot
- The chevron burlap originally came from Hobby Lobby (It was the leftover burlap from the DIY Spring Wreathe project that I posted on November 24th)
- I estimated the proper length of the burlap, leaving about an inch extra on either end of the strip (enough to glue to the back)
- Using Gorilla glue, I glued the top and bottom of the lateral piece of burlap to the back of the wood. If you are attempting this project, do not pull the burlap too tightly against the wood, in order to allow the burlap to be gathered in the middle. Using a piece of metal craft wiring or a thin piece of burlap, gather the burlap in the middle and tie it together, tucking the tied portion behind the burlap. *If you use Gorilla Glue, do not touch it with your fingers. Use a brush or a cloth to wipe away the excess. It could very well be stuck to you for days! (This is experience talking!)
- I overlaid the horizontal piece of burlap and also used Gorilla Glue to hold it in place in the back of the wood. Once again, do not pull the burlap too tightly, in order to allow the burlap to be gathered in the middle.
- Using a thinly cut piece of the burlap, I tied gathered the horizontal piece and tied it in place
- I allowed it to dry for at least 24 hours (follow the recommendations on the back of your glue bottle).
- The only thing left is to use your preferred kind of wall bracket and glue it to the back, if you want to hang it up on the wall! These can typically be purchased at a craft store.
